Effect of Bhoot Shuddhi Kriya on Blood Hemoglobin

Introduction

Bhoot Suddhi Kriya is a practice to clean the subtle energy channels as well as for the purification body. Bhogalet al (1999) have found that meditation improved the Hb of subjects. Khareet al (1989) had found that there was remarkable improvement in Hb level, total WBC count and packed cell volume as a consequence of yoga practice. The word Bhoot means pancha mahabhoota (five elements). Bhoot is manifest of five elements with defined qualities and natures; these are (1) Earth (Prithvi), (2) Water (Jal), (3) Fire (Agni), (4) Air (Yayu), (5) Ether (Aakash). Here Shuddhi means internal and external body purification and, in the words ‘Kriya’ means there are two syllables. One is Kri and the other is Ya. Kri means you do your work from morning until you go to bed. In addition, Ya means the conscious body. Kriya yoga is one of the easiest and most powerful methods for practicing mediation and awakening the spiritual consciences in human being (Satyananda 2004).

The soul is abiding in every human body. Therefore, the body can move, the body can work, the body is like a motorcar standing in the street and soul is the driver of the body car. Kriya means internal movement of consciousness, involuntary movement of action. It means “the pranayamic process of purification of five elements with Soham, it’s called Bhootshudhi Kriya”. “Soham is a combination of two words So+ Ham, “so” means “That and “Ham” means “I”, the basic identity of the living being as soul. “Tatvamasi” Aymatam Bahama, “Shivoam”, to derive home this vision, they advocate the elemental oneness of the creator (Brahma) and the creation (Individual) (Sharma 2004). Bhoot Shudhi Kriya is a science of correct breath. By proper inhalation when calmness descends, the devotee remains in complete bliss and perceives three divine qualities: divine sound, divine light, and divine vibration. We can understand the concept of Bhoot Shudhi Kriya with following points:

• It is the base on Pranayamic breathing exercise with Soham.
• It is the process of purification of five elements.
• It is the process of Nadisuddhi.
• It is the combination of Asna, Pranayam,Mediatation, and Prayer.
• It is the core of the art of living approach.
• It is the part of kriya yoga.
• It is the base and unity of all religions
• It is the process of Soham sadhana.
• It is a science of correct breath.

It means the pranayamic process of purification of five elements. The practice improves the clarity of thinking and increases concentration of the mind, prepares the individual for meditation and gives a stress free life. In the present study, the effect of Bhoot Suddhi Kriya on blood hemoglobin was observed.

Methodology

This study was conducted on 40 (20 males and 20 females) college going students (18-25 years of age) of Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya, Haridwar.

By using Shahli’s hemoglobin meter, blood Hb of each subject was measured and post measurement of blood Hb for the same subjects was taken after allowing practice of Bhoot Suddhi Kriya mentioned below for 40 days (except holidays).

Table 1, 2 and 3 clearly reveals that the calculated t-values were found to be significantly different on Hb variable resulting from the 40 days of Bhoot Suddhi Kriya intervention programme. This attributes to the fact that the Bhoot Suddhi Kriya intervention for 40 days had brought significantly favorable changes in the Hb level. During the practice of Bhoot Suddhi Kriya at the phase of Kumbhaka, low oxygen state (Hypoxia) is created. The principal stimulus for RBCs (Red Blood Cells) production in low oxygen state is a hormone called erythropoietin. When the erythropoietin system is functional, hypoxia causes a marked increase in erythropoietin production, and erythropoietin in turn enhances RBC production until the hypoxia is relieved. In this stage, the rate of RBC production can rise to perhaps 10 or more time normal (Guyton and Hall 2006). This Kriya releases the physical, mental and emotional tensions, occurs due to a process of purification in the subtle body. The person can feel flow of inner energy.

Conclusion

It may be concluded that the practice of Bhuat Shuddhi Kriya is found physiologically safe for normal person and can be recommended strongly for other people to maintain the sound health. However, it should be taught carefully to patients for a therapeutic purpose.
